Americans have always been inspired by people who transcend limitations. That’s one of the reasons we like sports so much. Sports pages are filled with stories of athletes who successfully battle a variety of natural obstacles: birth defects (withered left arm—golfer Calvin Peete), disease (cancer—Lance Armstrong), and aging (Randy Johnson).
